New Light-Based Therapy for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Why This Matters

Dry AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults over 55. It affects the macula — the part of the retina responsible for the sharp central vision we rely on to read, drive, and recognize faces. For a long time, the guidance for dry AMD was mostly to keep up with regular eye exams and manage risk factors. There wasn't much else we could offer.

How Valeda Works

The Valeda Light Delivery System, made by LumiThera, Inc., uses a combination of yellow, red, and near-infrared light to gently stimulate retinal cells. This supports the eye's natural energy production and helps clear cellular waste (drusen) — processes that tend to slow down as dry AMD progresses.

In the clinical trial that supported the treatment's FDA authorization, patients gained an average of more than five letters of visual acuity — about one line on a standard eye chart — after roughly a year of treatment. Treated patients were also significantly less likely to develop geographic atrophy, a more advanced form of dry AMD.
